How To Choose a Used Power Press Without Guesswork
A practical checklist for specifying and inspecting a used power press before you commit — written from the manufacturing side of the business, not the sales side.
1. Define the Job Before the Machine
Tonnage is only the headline number. Before you compare machines, pin down:
- Bed size — must clear your largest die, with margin for future tooling.
- Stroke length — determines part depth and how far material travels per cycle.
- Shut height — the closed daylight between bed and slide; your tooling must fit within it.
- Strokes per minute — sets your realistic production rate, not the machine's rated maximum.
- Material & gauge — thicker or harder material needs more tonnage margin than the raw calculation suggests.
2. What To Physically Check on a Used Machine

| Clutch & brake | Clean, immediate engagement; no delayed stopping or slipping under load. |
| Frame | No visible cracks, weld repairs, or uneven wear at stress points. |
| Electrical panel | Modern-standard wiring, functioning safety interlocks, no exposed or taped connections. |
| Lubrication system | Oil condition, no major leaks, functioning auto-lube if fitted. |
| Noise & vibration | Unusual knocking or vibration during a running test can indicate bearing or gear wear. |
3. Questions Worth Asking the Seller
- How many years in service, and in what application?
- Has it had a full electrical retrofit, or is the original panel still fitted?
- What refurbishment work was actually carried out — get it in writing.
- Is a run-test video or in-person trial available before purchase?
- What warranty terms apply, and what do they exclude?
- Can they help with erection, commissioning and import/customs formalities?
4. New vs Reconditioned — When Each Makes Sense
Reconditioned machines make the most sense when you need to add capacity quickly, are working with an established part number and don't need the latest control technology. New presses make more sense for very high-precision, high-automation lines, or when total cost of ownership over 15–20 years outweighs the upfront saving.
